E-Mail Marketing is like Dating… My TOP 10 Tips for Building a Romantic Relationship with Your List:)
Oct.21, 2009
The first thing I learned how to do when I became an online marketer was to build my own personal list. Over and over I was told that “your money is in your list.” So, I got an autoresponder account, made a few capture pages and began to get leads. After some time, I learned that your money is not really in “the list,” your money is in your relationship with your list. Online marketing is really all about creating relationships. I like to compare it to dating:) Just like dating, it takes a very delicate and clever person to build trust and create intimacy with someone who may have been “burned” by the many “jerk” network marketers out there who are only in it for one thing;) Below I have posted my top 10 list of Email Marketing Tips that have produced beautiful relationships and made my business flourish…
1. CARE ABOUT YOUR LIST. It’s important to realize that the people in your list are actually PEOPLE, not just names. Give content that is relevant to their needs. Ask for feedback. Be empathetic, listen to your audience… let them know you care. Treat them like they are your best friends and you will develop a very loyal following.
2. KEEP YOUR E-MAILS SHORT AND SIMPLE. In this fast paced society, people are more likely to read something short and save something long-winded for later. Just like you would try not to talk too much on a first date, try not to “talk too much” in your e-mails. “I’ll read it later” means “I will probably never read it at all.”
3. 10% MARKETING, 90% YOU. I was having a conversation the other day with some of my friends about how many people are starting to become REALLY turned off by all the marketing going on. 5 years ago, the marketing lingo which plays on people’s emotions and compels them to “buy NOW’ worked really well. Now it has become annoying and spammy. There are many wonderful books on how to produce great web copy and I do recommend you read up on it a little, but only use about 10% marketing, the rest of the time you should be YOU. Lose the “formal” voice when writing your emails. Be fun, friendly, and REAL!

4. FLIRT AND TEASE YOUR LIST. Cultivating Curiosity is the best way to get people to click on your links. Only give enough information to make people want to know more. Occasionally I will push my list by telling them to unsubscribe if they do not want what I have to offer, explaining exactly what I am about. This is a very flirtatious thing to do and usually keeps the people who are interested excited and sparks interest in those who are “lukewarm.”
5. TRACK YOUR LINKS. Use a system like Get Response or AWeber… so you can figure out what is working and what could use some improvement.
6. PERFECT YOUR FREQUENCY. The frequency of your e-mails is important. Just like dating someone new, you don’t want to be too available or clingy but you don’t want to be to elusive and standoffish either. If you are a small business, sending out a newsletter once a month is a perfect. If you are an Internet marketer, no more than one to two times a week and no less than once every 2 weeks is a great frequency.
7. MAKE YOUR SUBJECT LINE INTERESTING. The two things that get your email opened are “From” and “Subject”. Create trust by giving your list valuable and fun content. Create interest by making your subject line intriguing.
8. PERSONALIZE YOUR NEWSLETTER. The other day I added a photo to my newsletter and increased my click through rate by 15%!!! That is a HUGE increase! People want to connect with people, not words. You can personalize your e-mails by adding your own live signature or choosing a unique background image. Spruce up your emails with occasional inserts of other media… videos, pictures, and sound bites work well. Play around and discover what works best for you.
9. TELL A STORY. Use everyday scenarios, metaphors, and parables in relating your concepts. Share your own personal experiences. People LOVE stories. They help make your information interesting and understandable.
10. COMMIT TO YOUR CONSTANT GROWTH AND EVOLUTION. The more value you have, the more value you offer others. The more value you offer others, the more wealth you are able to create because people will want to join you and purchase from you. Remember, when you own your own business, it’s really YOU who is your business. Invest in yourself and you invest in your business:)

What a fun way to summarize the relationship between you and your list, especially when you are a national speaker and your list consists of loyal “followers”. Thanks for the tips.

I guess some people need to do it their way. I was in an MLM where Big Al Tom Shreiter said there was no chance of building an MLM business through the mail. Here was part owner of the company. Five months later after doing mailings, I was making over $5,000 monthly.
